Eastern Cape Province, 1996

On 25 March 1996, the Eastern Cape Province was granted its arms. The shield displays the Cape Aloe, symbolising perseverance and strength; the three flowers sprouting from a single stem show unity amongst the different groups living in the province. On either side are red flanks, symbolising the soil. Blue waves at the bottom represent the coastline of the Eastern Cape. The crest shows a head ring made of leopard skin, a symbol of authority: prestige, power and heritage of the province. It is topped by the sun, symbolising the abundant sunshine and the people’s positive attitude and friendliness. Two elands support the arms; these are the largest of the antelope and represent magnificence. The base of the arms bears the motto “DEVELOPMENT THROUGH UNITY”.
